Christ Fellowship Today: What is the church? https://www.christfellowshipmaine.org/news--announcements/post/christ-fellowship-today-_4 https://www.christfellowshipmaine.org/news--announcements/post/christ-fellowship-today-_4#comments Thu, 07 Apr 2016 01:00:00 -0400 https://www.christfellowshipmaine.org/news--announcements/post/christ-fellowship-today-_4 What is the nature and purpose of the church?

In 1 Peter 2:9, the Apostle tells the church, “You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” The church fulfills all of these Old Testament motifs of God’s people. We have good news to proclaim to the world; that through Jesus Christ His Son, God has called us out of darkness and into His light.

Peter continues in verse 10, “For you were once not a people, but now you are the people of God; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.” On the cross, Jesus received the wrath of God on our sin, so that we would receive the mercy of God. Through faith in Jesus Christ we are no longer children of the devil, but children of God.

Peter is speaking to us, not as individuals, but as the church. It is our collective nature to be light in the darkness and to speak out loud to all who will hear, the excellencies of God’s saving glory!

Christ Fellowship Today: What happened to the Temple? https://www.christfellowshipmaine.org/news--announcements/post/christ-fellowship-today-_3 https://www.christfellowshipmaine.org/news--announcements/post/christ-fellowship-today-_3#comments Tue, 05 Apr 2016 01:00:00 -0400 https://www.christfellowshipmaine.org/news--announcements/post/christ-fellowship-today-_3 Whatever happened to the Temple of God?

History confirms that the Temple of God in Jerusalem was destroyed by the Romans in AD70. That is the Temple that Jesus was looking at when He said, in John 2:19, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” But John tells us that Jesus was speaking of the temple of His body; knowing that He would die on the cross and be raised from the dead. The Temple, or the dwelling place of God, was always meant to point to more than a stone building.

Listen to 1 Peter 2:4-5, “And coming to Him as to a living stone which has been rejected by men, but is choice and precious in the sight of God, you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood.” God is building His dwelling place out of living stones; people who believe in Jesus’ death and resurrection. The church is the new dwelling place of God as He indwells His people by the Holy Spirit.

And the most important part of God’s new and living temple is its choice and precious cornerstone, who is none other than Jesus Christ!

Christ Fellowship Today: Do you believe Jesus is the Prince of Peace? https://www.christfellowshipmaine.org/news--announcements/post/christ-fellowship-today-do-you-believe-jesus-is-the-prince-of-peace https://www.christfellowshipmaine.org/news--announcements/post/christ-fellowship-today-do-you-believe-jesus-is-the-prince-of-peace#comments Thu, 07 Jan 2016 04:00:00 -0500 https://www.christfellowshipmaine.org/news--announcements/post/christ-fellowship-today-do-you-believe-jesus-is-the-prince-of-peace Hi, I’m Scott Terry. Happy New Year from Christ Fellowship Today.

Do you really believe that Jesus is the Prince of Peace?

As we begin this New Year, there are a lot of things going on that bring hostility between people. War, terrorism, and murder. Political change and social unrest. Economic breakdowns and financial mismanagement. In America, secularism is advancing in its push to eradicate the sanctity of human life, to erase the sanctity of marriage, and even to blur those very basic gender distinctions that are assigned by God to every person at conception.

We are involved in a clash of worldviews which brings out two tendencies. The first tendency is to either hide fear, or to polarize in anger. Neither is acceptable. We have the right of every citizen to exercise our faith and to participate in our nation’s democratic process. So, do it.

The other tendency is to spend our time pointing the finger at the culture. The problem isn’t that culture is behaving like culture. The problem is that the church often doesn’t behave like the church should. The church of the Lord Jesus Christ is on a disciple-making mission, knowing that true peace comes only by faith in the Prince of Peace.

Some things are better caught than taught, which is why the Apostle Paul admonishes the church saying, “Live in peace with one another.” The acts and attitudes of true peace begin in Christian hearts. The church is to be a strong and courageous display of peace to those who have no peace.

Be strong and courageous. Come worship Jesus Christ this Sunday at 10:00am at Christ Fellowship Church.

Christ Fellowship Today: What happens inside the church? https://www.christfellowshipmaine.org/news--announcements/post/christ-fellowship-today-what-happens-inside-the-church https://www.christfellowshipmaine.org/news--announcements/post/christ-fellowship-today-what-happens-inside-the-church#comments Tue, 05 Jan 2016 06:00:00 -0500 https://www.christfellowshipmaine.org/news--announcements/post/christ-fellowship-today-what-happens-inside-the-church Hi, I’m Scott Terry. Happy New Year from Christ Fellowship Today.

What does the average person on the street think happens in church? Many have no idea. Some will list things that I think are wonderful; like praying, singing, and reading Scripture; but that they find boring.

In the Apostle Paul’s letter to the church in Thessalonica, he talks about three things going on in the church that are really exciting; their works of faith, their labors of love, and their steadfast hope. Paul is convinced that these are the things that a real church is made of. He tells the people to continue in these three things and to excel in them.

Let’s take stock at the beginning of a New Year, by answering a couple of questions. First, what do you think the church is? Is it a building location? Is it an event held at a certain time? Or, is it the people of God? What you think the church is will shape your understanding of what the church does.

There are a million things the church could do. Praying, singing and proclaiming Scripture are necessary activities in the church. But the second question is threefold. Is the church growing in their faith in Christ and His gospel? Are the brothers and sisters excelling in their love for one another? And, are these redeemed people being filled with the unassailable hope that Jesus will return?

I want to be part of a church in which those things are happening. Come worship Jesus Christ at Christ Fellowship Church this Sunday at 10:00am.

Christ Fellowship Today: Receiving the Gift of Salvation https://www.christfellowshipmaine.org/news--announcements/post/christ-fellowship-today-receiving-the-gift-of-salvation https://www.christfellowshipmaine.org/news--announcements/post/christ-fellowship-today-receiving-the-gift-of-salvation#comments Thu, 31 Dec 2015 12:00:00 -0500 https://www.christfellowshipmaine.org/news--announcements/post/christ-fellowship-today-receiving-the-gift-of-salvation Hi, I’m Scott Terry. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from Christ Fellowship Today!

Matthew gives us a picture of two reactions to the news of Jesus’ birth at Christmas. We can follow Herod’s path or the way of the Magi. King Herod was troubled by the news of Jesus’ birth. Herod himself, claimed to be the king of the Jews, so he was not happy to hear the news of a challenger. Herod liked being his own king. He liked his selfish attitude, his hateful speech, and his sinful pursuit of satisfying his every lust. You know what he looks like.

The Magi were completely different. They had risked everything to search for Jesus. They journeyed long and far to meet Jesus. And this is what happened when they saw Jesus; “They fell to the ground and worshipped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.”

We are all like Herod in this way; we do not want to yield to Jesus’ rightful authority over us. Herod will continue on that path; he will die for his rejection of King Jesus; and worms will eat his flesh forever. How’s that for a bit of New Year’s cheer? Sobering isn’t it?

But the Magi willingly bow before Jesus and devote their allegiance to Him. As by faith they acknowledge Jesus, the gift of salvation, they submit themselves as His loyal servants.

Come worship Jesus the King this Sunday at 10am at Christ Fellowship Church. Check us out at christfellowshipmaine.org, and have a blessed New Year.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from Christ Fellowship Today!

Matthew tells us it was shortly after Jesus was born that the Magi, wise and important men from nations far away, journeyed to Jerusalem for one explicit purpose; to find Jesus and worship Him. What prompted their long, costly trip? How did they learn about Jesus in the first place? Why would they worship Jesus, whom they called the King of the Jews?

When we strip away all of the interesting details of this account, we’re left with one obvious conclusion. God brought these people to worship His Son. God had revealed the birth of Jesus the Messiah in Scripture. He had revealed the place of the Messiah in history; Jewish Kings lived in Jerusalem. And, the timing of Jesus birth was shone by a star in the heavens. After bringing the Magi to worship Jesus, God even gives them safe directions home in a dream.

From beginning to end, God has orchestrated worship for His glorious Son from all peoples of the world. Jesus is the King who deserves our homage and delight. He is the King who, by His willing sacrifice on the cross in our place, has saved His people from their sin. It’s by faith that we become His people; His loyal subject. Jesus is the King of all kings who alone is worthy to be praised.

Come worship Jesus the King this Sunday at 10am at Christ Fellowship Church. Check us out at Christ Fellowship Maine . org, and have a blessed New Year.

Merry Christmas from Christ Fellowship Today!

Every year we have a full year to prepare for Christmas. But what if Christmas came suddenly and unexpectedly? In Luke’s gospel the angel Gabriel appears to Mary and says this, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you. Do not be afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God; And behold you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus.”

That’s not only sudden, that’s incredibly intimate, and had to be pretty shocking to Mary. God didn’t seek Mary’s permission, but declared that Mary would conceive within her virgin womb the Son of God by the Holy Spirit. And, there is only one way to understand this shocking interruption in Mary’s life, it’s a good thing. Mary had found favor with Almighty God. That’s why she responded saying, “I am the servant of the Lord, may it be done to me according to your word.” “My soul exalts the Lord and Holy is His name!”

Why is God so bold to interrupt our lives? Bound by our own sin and selfishness, we would never invite Jesus into our lives, not even at Christmas. It’s by His grace that God sent Jesus to become the sacrifice for our sins on the cross. It’s by His grace that God give us the faith to believe and the will to turn from our sin and serve Him. When God breaks into your life with the true story of Christmas, it’s a good thing. Welcome Him and worship Him!

Won’t you come worship Jesus with us this Sunday at 10am and again Christmas Eve at 7pm, at Christ Fellowship Church.

Merry Christmas from Christ Fellowship Today!

Have you ever felt disappointed at Christmas? I’ll bet Joseph did. Listen to this from Matthew’s gospel, “The birth of Jesus Christ happened this way: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly.” We know that the babe in Mary’s womb is of the Holy Spirit, but Joseph doesn’t.

Joseph had to be disappointed in Mary who was pregnant, and not by him. All his plans and preparations and hopes dashed; and he had done nothing wrong. Could it be true that God’s plan for the birth of Jesus would include all this disappointment in this righteous man’s life?

We would never have planned it this way, but in the midst of disappointment Joseph would obey God’s instructions with great zeal; keeping Mary pure and naming the baby, Jesus, which means Savior. Joseph would serve God as the earthly father of Immanuel, God with us. Isn’t God’s presence precisely what a righteous man wants?

If you think about it, it’s really our own sin that we find so disappointing. God places His Son Jesus in the midst of our sinful lives and says, ‘Believe in Him’. He will save you from your sin. And in Him you will never be disappointed. Why? Because Jesus is Himself the very presence of God.

Come worship Jesus, the Savior who promises to be with us always, this Sunday at 10am and again Christmas Eve at 7pm, at Christ Fellowship Church.

Why would Matthew take a great story like the birth of Jesus and start it with a boring list of hard to pronounce names like Rehoboam and Jehoshaphat? Well, in addition to those names, we find that Jesus is a descendent of King David.

In fact, Matthew writes that Jesus is the son of David. Here’s why that’s exciting. Because the promises of hope that God made to Abraham are expanded in His promises to David the king. What are they? In the book of 1 Samuel, God promised that the son of David would be a man of the Spirit. And when David defeated the giant Goliath, God promised that the son of David would be a great deliverer. In the book of 2 Samuel, God promised the hope of His presence through His son, Jesus. And that Jesus would build God’s Temple with the hearts of those who call Him King.

Though David was a man who loved God, he failed God many times. He was an adulterer and a murderer. What hope is there for a failure like him at Christmas? Hope is not found in David, but in the son of David. Failure is in us, but hope is found in Jesus Christ; the man of the Spirit, who delivers from our sin, and brings us back to God.

Overwhelmed by failure, you can find the very hope of God this Christmas, when you find Jesus Christ, the son of David!

Come find Jesus and the hope of God with us this Sunday at 10am and again Christmas Eve at 7pm, at Christ Fellowship Church.
