Christ Fellowship Today: What happened to the Temple?

Whatever happened to the Temple of God?

History confirms that the Temple of God in Jerusalem was destroyed by the Romans in AD70. That is the Temple that Jesus was looking at when He said, in John 2:19, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” But John tells us that Jesus was speaking of the temple of His body; knowing that He would die on the cross and be raised from the dead. The Temple, or the dwelling place of God, was always meant to point to more than a stone building.

Listen to 1 Peter 2:4-5, “And coming to Him as to a living stone which has been rejected by men, but is choice and precious in the sight of God, you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood.” God is building His dwelling place out of living stones; people who believe in Jesus’ death and resurrection. The church is the new dwelling place of God as He indwells His people by the Holy Spirit.

And the most important part of God’s new and living temple is its choice and precious cornerstone, who is none other than Jesus Christ!
